Don’t be fooled by the relatively short blade length of the LMF II. Its compact, well-thought-out design has it ranked on our list of best survival knives. It’s easy to take along for camping and all kinds of outdoor purposes. All around, a great knife.
The Gerber LMF II is a sleek, modern-looking tactical knife that’s been field-tested with American troops. It’s great for all sorts of general use applications.
Sharp, fine edge blade
Compact for easy travel
Impact absorbing handle
Short blade length
Not a full tang knife
The LMF II Survival Knife was originally designed to free aircraft personnel from aircraft. You can take that to mean that it performs well under many tough applications. It’s a great strap cutter, can be used as a spear, cut firewood, and on and on. It may not be quite as durable and time-tested as the Ka-Bar Full Size US Marine Corps Fighting Knife, but it performs at a high level in a more compact package.
The design of the LMF II is well thought out for intense and extended use. As with most high-quality survival knives, the Gerber is a fixed blade knife. It’s intentionally not full tang, though, to reduce the impact from hammering. The handle is composed of glass-filled nylon.
The almost five-inch blade is a drop point style, which extends the spine of the blade as long as possible to the point. It’s made of stainless steel with a partially serrated edge before its fine edge. The LMF II comes with a durable, fire-resistant sheath to protect the blade in any situation.
The Gerber LMF II Survival Knife is a good value for someone looking for a compact yet effective survival knife. It’s a little more than the Morakniv Bushcraft Survival Knife, but it’s worth the extra dough (unless you truly want a fixed blade knife). There’s also an LMF II Infantry version, which is slightly more money. Gerber LMF II Review Wrap Up
The LMF II is the best bet if you’re looking for something more compact and with a more modern build than more traditional knives, like the Ka-Bar. Its sleek aesthetic makes it fun to use and show off, and its handle design is great for high-impact usage.
