We all know that Mother Nature likes to surprise us. It has become especially apparent in the last few years that natural disasters can come without warning and much more often than expected. When a disaster hits, you may be left without power, water, and access to a way to cook and prepare precious food that you need to survive. Although we all hope we will never have to experience a disaster situation first hand, it comes in handy to be prepared and have a plan that you can immediately put into action should the need occur.
The key to being prepared for an emergency situation is to stock up on shelf-stable foods that don’t need to be cooked by an oven or microwave ahead of time. Many items like crackers, tuna, beans, peanut butter, granola, canned fruits and vegetables, and soup have a long shelf life and all contain important nutrients that will help keep you strong and healthy during an emergency situation.
First, you need to clear a spot in your pantry or emergency shelter for food and water; enough to last at the minimum one week. If you are facing a more apocalyptic situation, have a device that cleans and sanitizes water is absolutely necessary. Also, garden seeds such as vegetables and leafy greens are a good idea to have on hand should you need to start fresh after a major apocalyptic disaster.
If you’ve managed to save a grill and the weather is good enough that you can cook outside (please NEVER cook with a grill indoors, not even in your garage) then you can use foil to make dinner packets which are essential one-pot meals thrown together for quickness and ease of cooking. No grill, consider investing in a camping stove or gas hot plate. Neither use electricity but can be a lifesaver in the need to heat and purify water.
While you may think that the recipes you will prepare in a disaster situation won’t be savory or full of flavor, that does not have to be true. Here is an example of a recipe that takes absolutely no heating at all and can be prepared in 5 minutes:
Peanut Butter & Granola Wraps
•1 cup peanut butter
•1 cup granola
• ¼ peanuts (chopped)
•2 tablespoons honey
•1/2 cup dried cherries
•4 ten inch tortillas
In bowl, combine peanut butter, granola, chopped peanuts, and honey and mix well. Stir in dried cherries. Spread tortillas with peanut butter mixture. Roll up tortillas and cut in half.
